Check Insurance Coverage Before Hurricanes Threaten Now is the time to check your homeowner's insurance policy to make sure it contains adequate coverage, and to learn how to report damage. Don't wait until a hurricane appears on the radar; most insurance companies will not accept new applications after a designated hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico. Remember that all of Florida is susceptible to damage from a hurricane, not just coastal counties. Damage can be caused anywhere in the state by flooding, strong winds or tornadoes as a hurricane sweeps inland. Before the storm: • Check your homeowner's policy to make sure it contains flood & windstorm coverage.
• Review coverage limits on homes & valuables to make sure they are fully covered.
• Determine whether your policy will pay replacement cost or actual cash value in the event of a loss.
• Find out whether the policy will pay for "additional living expenses" to cover the costs of hotel rooms & meals should your home become uninhabitable.
• Record & update an inventory of all personal belongings. Make photos or a videotape showing your possessions. Record insurance policy information.
After the storm has passed: • Report any damage to your home or property to your insurance agent as soon as possible. Keep track of the special reference number for your claim issued by the insurance company.
• Make sure the adjuster assigned to you is properly licensed. Ask to see identification.
• Make any needed emergency repairs to your home as required by your policy. Be careful of structural damage, escaping gas or fallen power lines. Never touch a damaged or downed power line! Report it immediately.
• Hire only licensed & reputable contractors for repair work.
