Updates on Outages Caused by Tropical Storm Fay
(August 23, 2008)

 *************************************************************

As of 9:30 PM on Saturday evening, West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) crews had restored power to nearly all its members throughout Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson and Washington Counties.

Additional inclement weather is expected over the next several hours.  More power outages may occur due to weather conditions, so WFEC crews remain on stand-by.

Member-owners who are still without power should call the cooperative at (800) 342-7400.

WFEC would like to thank all of its members for their patience and cooperation throughout the cooperative’s restoration efforts.

 *************************************************************

West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) crews continue to work on power outages throughout Calhoun and East Jackson Counties. At 4:30 PM this afternoon, approximately 250 WFEC members were still without electric service.

Member-owners who have been without power for longer than six to eight hours should call the cooperative at (800) 342-7400 to ensure their outage has been reported.

WFEC crews will continue to work as long as weather conditions permit us to do so safely. Line crews from Peace River Electric Cooperative in Wauchula, Florida are en route to assist WFEC crews with repairs as Tropical Storm Fay continues to move across Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson and Washington Counties.

WFEC would like to thank all of its members for their patience and cooperation throughout restoration efforts.

 *************************************************************

Due to the effects of Tropical Storm Fay and a large number of power outages, West Florida Electric (WFEC) has activated its automated outage response phone system to process information from customers as efficiently as possible.

We are still aware of the outages throughout the eastern portion of Jackson and much of Calhoun County. WFEC crews are working throughout the areas to restore service as quickly as possible.

Because the system uses callers’ telephone numbers to locate reported outages, customers calling to report an outage from a phone number other than the one listed on their WFEC electric account records should enter the correct phone number when promoted by the co-op’s automated phone system. This includes callers using cell phones.

If you are experiencing a health or medical emergency, please dial 911.

  *************************************************************

Due to the effects of Tropical Storm Fay, West Florida Electric Cooperative members began experiencing many scattered power outages early last evening. More than 2,500 customers were out of power during the night due to trees and limbs on power lines or downed lines.

Seven hundred members currently remain out of power in Calhoun and East Jackson Counties in the cooperative’s service area. Approximately 400 of those are in Calhoun County and 300 in East Jackson County.

West Florida Electric line crews have worked throughout the night with additional crews being dispatched into the area first thing this morning. Crews have experienced many challenges throughout the storm including multiple outages in the same locations. In some cases, as lines were repaired and power restored, the storm took them out only a few hours later.

If you’re a WFEC customer who still doesn’t have power, or if you see damage such as a downed power line or limbs on a line, please call (800) 342-7400. Please stay away from any downed power lines you may encounter. WFEC would like to thank all of its members for their patience and cooperation throughout restoration efforts.
